| What is the Young Actors Theatre? | | | The Young Actors Theatre is Islington's very own community theatre. They run affordable drama, dance and singing lessons for all-comers, regardless of background or ability to pay. There is no audition process, the only requirement is a passion for self expression and creativity and a willingness to learn. Their comprehensive curriculum also includes mime, circus skills, improvisation, stage combat, stage management and creative writing. In this supportive and accessible environment, young people can develop the vital social skills of team work, emotional literacy, conflict resolution and an invaluable sense of self-worth that will remain with them for their whole lives, regardless of their choice of profession. Many have gone on to successful careers in the theatre, film or television, but YAT consider the enormous boost to their confidence and self-motivation the most significant benefit of attending the YA. | | | So why are they telling you all this? | | | Because, of course, it all costs money. Fees for membership are deliberately kept as low as possible and they remain as committed as ever that no-one should be excluded through lack of funds. They are keen to strengthen ties with the local business community and forge symbiotic relationships with companies who are committed to maintaining Islington's proud cultural and community heritage. The Young Actors Theatre's key areas for development are: | | | Ongoing maintenance and refurbishment of an ageing building | | | This includes making the premises fully accessible and fit for purpose, both as a teaching and workshop space but as a fully equipped and comfortable theatre. | | | Putting on really professional productions | | | Apart from giving young people opportunities to experience both the hard work and incredible satisfaction of being on stage in a piece of high-quality theatre, it's a chance to show just how good they are! Since 2004, they have put on A Midsummer Night's Dream, Peter Pan, Mark Ravenhill's play Citizenship, The Shoemaker's Wondrous Wife by Lorca, A Bridge to the Stars and the UK premiere of an extraordinary Austrian play Spiel im Berg. | | | What can YAT offer a potential business sponsor? | | | Firstly, to be a part of the success story that is the Young Actors Theatre. Sponsors can help with and attach their name to a particular defined project for example, new seats in the theatre. Alternatively you could support one of their productions. Have your name on all the publicity material and come along with your colleagues, friends and family to a gala performance. They are currently planning a live soap opera which, besides being hugely entertaining, will reflect the many faces of Islington. | | | Or perhaps YAT can help you. The skills given our young people are highly relevant to commerce; team-building, conflict resolution and public speaking. When was the last time you were trapped in a room with a 15-minute power-point presentation that felt like it was lasting two hours? YAT has the expertise to offer bespoke workshops that address particular issues in your workplace. They can even help you with sales training. | | | You may even fancy trying your hand at a bit of acting yourself. YAT run adult classes on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays. | | | If some of this appeals, please contact: Andrew Harries (Artistic Director), Andrew@yati.org.uk, or Simon Fraser (Development Manager) simon@yati.org.uk or call 020 7278 2101 |
